Brewers Lineup After Last Packers Super Bowl

Most of the state of Wisconsin will be focused on Dallas and the Super Bowl today, so forgive me for posting on something only semi-related to the Packers today.

By now we all know that the Packers are playing in the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1997-1998 season. That’s a pretty long time, especially considering the parity in the NFL. Both the Packers and the Brewers have come a long way since 1998.

The last time the Packers were in the Super Bowl, the Brewers were getting ready to begin their first season in the National League. Their Opening Day lineup?

2B Fernando Vina, 3B Jeff Cirillo, 1B John Jaha, RF Jeromy Burnitz, CF Marquis Grissom, SS Jose Valentin, LF Marc Newfield, C Mike Matheny, P Cal Eldred. That team ended the year 74-88 and 5th in the NL Central. At least they got off to a 16-9 start and spent 20 days in first place.

This year’s expected lineup? Probably something like 2B Rickie Weeks, RF Corey Hart, LF Ryan Braun, 1B Prince Fielder, 3B Casey McGehee, C Jonathan Lucroy, SS Yuniesky Betancourt, CF Carlos Gomez, P Zack Greinke. I love Cirillo and Burnitz, but good grief…talk about an overall improvement.

We can only hope the 2011 Brewers fare better than the 1997 and 1998 Brewers did following Green Bay trips to the Super Bowl, right? Go Pack.
