OTF: Morning Box Scores 4/14/12

DavisYesterday was Friday the 13th, but it wasn’t all bad for the farm system.  Actually it was more like a repeat of Thursday night as the youngsters went 2-2 for the day once again.  Remember tomorrow’s report will include our first ever player of the week award, so check back for that!

Last night saw Huntsville win by a score of 4-3 over the Birmingham Barons.  It took a 2 run seventh inning for the Stars to pull out the narrow victory.  With Huntsville down 3-2 entering the seventh they made two quick outs, but a wild pitch from the Barons scored Brock Kjeldgaard and moved Hunter Morris to second.  Morris would score on a single by Khris Davis to earn the winning margin.  Kyle Heckathorn got the start for Huntsville and he had a decent 6 innings as he gave up 3 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 to earn the victory.

Once again the Nashville Sounds went down to defeat, staying at just two wins on the year thanks to a series opening 6-4 defeat at home to the New Orleans Zephyrs.  Nashville dug itself a 6-0 hole to try to climb out of in the first 5 1/2 innings, but they exploded for four runs in their half of the sixth to make a bit of a comeback attempt.  Unfortunately that was all the offensive fireworks they could muster as starter Brian Barker took the loss to move to 1-1.  He had a bad day on the mound going just 4 1/3 innings and giving up all 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks.  Barker only mustered up 1 strike out before being replaced by Amaury Rivas in the top of the 5th inning.

High-A Brevard County also went down to defeat, losing 4-1 to the division leading Dunedin Blue Jays.  The score is a bit misleading though as starting pitcher Hiram Burgos went a sold six innings giving up no runs on just 3 hits while striking out four.  It took a 4 run 8th inning from the Jays to earn the victory.  Cody Hawn hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to plate the only Manatees run and gave them a 1-0 lead that they carried into the 8th inning.

Wisconsin got their 2nd straight victory over the Peoria Chiefs, winning 5-2 yesterday.  Kevin Shackleford got the win in relief thanks to some good pitching over three innings as well as the T-Rats bats giving him three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to separate themselves from the Chiefs.

Player of the Day: Khris Davis (DH) – Huntsville: Davis went 3-for-5 from the plate and drove in a pair of runs in the Stars 4-3 victory over Birmingham.  He’s hitting an impressive .367 so far this year as well.
